Principal’s Pen

Dear Parents and Whanau,
Welcome back to Term Two. Firstly, thank you to our families for the quick reply to our Health Consultation Survey. If you haven’t already, you have till Friday 17th May to return the survey. Your input into health education at Tokomaru School is very important to us.
This term our theme is called “Is there anybody out there?” This programme examines the concepts of stellar motion, ageing of stars, meaning of stars in cultures (Matariki), and the use of patterns in the night sky and the possibility of life on Mars.
In Week 9, we will be visiting Rangiotu Marae were our students will take part in a powhiri, learn how to make poi, learn a haka, and gain knowledge and understanding about our closest Marae.   As a part of our inquiry, the children will be learning their mihi (how to introduce themselves in Maori). This includes information such as their mountain, river, school and parent’s names. The school will have a basic mihi which the children will all learn unless your family has other affiliations that you would like your child to use. Nga Mihi will link back to the school and cluster speech competition.

Again, Tokomaru School will be hosting the Cluster Cross Country. To make this event successful and safe, parent help will be required. As this is a competitive event, teachers will be selecting students based on class practices, times and placing’s at the school cross-country.

Teaching staff are also planning to have a school disco, a spelling bee competition and have the Star Lab visit the school.

As you can see, Term 2 is going to be action packed with teaching and learning.

Finally, I wish all our students good luck with the start of the winter sports season this Saturday. Play hard but fair. Be gracious losers and humble winners.
